Beowulf Outline

The following outline divides the 3182-line Old English alliterative poem "Beowulf" into its component parts, breaking it down into sections and sub-parts in order to make study and analysis more effective by detailing its contents. The poet, of course, only provided numbered "fitt" divisions (and these somewhat inconsistently), but here the work is further broken down by subject matter and sequences within each "scene," as well as employing an over-arching three-act structure for each major section (i.e. Ogre, Troll, Dragon). Much debate has been given to the structure of "Beowulf" - whether two, three, or even four "acts" are intended, if any at all, but here we are simply interested in what the poem actually contains, as a basis for futher discussion and debate. To this end, the primary textual cruces are also noted at the point which they appear.
